Nothing ends a season faster than an injury. Christmas light work means ladders, roofs, and cold, wet surfaces — the exact recipe for a fall. Run this checklist on every rooftop job, every time.
1. Inspect the ladder first
Check the feet, rungs, and locks before it leaves the truck. A bent or worn ladder is not worth the risk.
2. Use the 4-to-1 rule
For every four feet of height, move the base one foot from the wall. Extend the ladder three feet above the roofline so there's something to hold.
3. Have a spotter
A second person footing the ladder prevents most falls. It also speeds up the job.
4. Never work in wind or ice
Wet, frosty, or windy conditions dramatically raise the risk. Reschedule — the customer will understand, and your crew will thank you.
5. Three points of contact
Two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand, on the ladder at all times. Hoist materials with a bucket and rope, not in your arms.
6. Watch the power lines
Aluminum ladders and overhead lines are a deadly mix. Keep well clear and use fiberglass near any electrical service.
7. Wear the right gear
Non-slip boots, gloves, and a harness on steep or high roofs. It's cheap insurance.
